In the poem "Huswifery", Edward Taylor uses conceit and descriptive diction to convey that the speaker wants God to take control of his life. Taylor's use of conceit of taking the thread from the spindle and making "Holy robes" demonstrates that the speaker wants to be the "thread" and for God to make him into something great. In other words, for God to make one of the elect. Throughout the poem, Taylor uses many words with religious meaning. This conveys to the readers that the speaker is religious and that God is a prominent belief/figure in his life. Edward Taylor's poem demonstrates use of conceit to show the importance of religion and God in peoples lives.

In Picasso's painting "The Old Guitarist," the use of the color blue and the brown guitar demonstrate the idea that people need to be able to express themselves to live. The old man's facial contour and body position add to the fact that he may be depressed yet still cherishes his guitar. This guitar is the thing that is keeping him going, which is quite evident while looking at the way the old man cradles the instrument. His bony body structure may suggest that he does not take care of himself but rather puts his guitar above his needs. The color blue is the whole painting but this brown guitar stands out among the depressing scene, clarifying that this guitar is the center of the old man's world and defending the importance of self expression. |
